Lucinda took no pity on the writhing creature, who had fallen to the ground. Nor did she offer her services to heal the wounds. Arcix would not die from this, from what she could tell. She looked at Fawkes, whose anger was very much unsuited to him. "Fawkes, we should leave, before we do something we might regret."

Fawkes was much more appealed to the idea of attacking the creature and ending it's pathetic life. (He was feeling quite vindictive at the moment.) However, instead he tore his glare from the demented figure and looked up at Lucinda, grudgingly saying. "If you'd prefer." Before she could reply, he'd taken off, not wanting to give himself to change his mind.

Lucinda quickly followed after him, feeling both awkward and miserable at the same time. How were they supposed to talk after this? What would Fawkes think now? Did must have seen her memory, and known how tainted and sullied she became. Perhaps he wanted nothing to do with her now. "Fawkes?" she inquired unsurely, her tone soft. "Are you alright?"

Once they were away from Acrix, and Lucinda caught up to him, Fawkes managed to reign in a bit of his anger. Only a bit, but he was relatively calmer. When Lucinda asked about his well-being, he nearly snorted. "Me?" he shook his head, "What about you? That old man is lucky he's long since dead. He would be soon if he weren't... " Well, there went any attempt at returning to his calm nature. "I didn't realize how bad it had been... And your surrounded by it all, the snow."

Lucinda didn't say anything for a while. Fawkes had just summed up her feelings perfectly. She couldn't have helped but dwell on the snow, and even now, it seemed to mock her. "This is a war, Fawkes." she said simply. "And they were in need of help. I couldn't say no." she said, knowing how lame that sounded. She looked to Fawkes, whose expression was highly angry. And it seemed that he didn't blame her. "Besides, that was almost forty years ago. I've had time to move on." She trilled a few positive notes at him, though they came across as more unsure if anything.

Fawkes' tone softened a bit as he spoke again. "I know you couldn't say no. But this isn't something you just move on from. I'm not suggesting you leave, merely commenting on the trials this must bring. You saw my worst memory! If anyone should have moved on by now, then I'd be that someone." He had to look away, the familiar failure of the dead dotting the floors of hogwarts in his eyes. "I just don't want you to hide away the fact that the snow reminds you of horrible things. Not to me... Alright? I want to be able to be there for you, and I can't do that if you hide."

Lucinda's eyes misted. An overwhelming mix of emotions flooded through her. Fawkes, another of her kind, had seen everything and didn't view her as something vile and wretched. He showed concern for her, something she hadn't been privy to in so long. She swallowed back the urge to cry, and gave him a glistening, relieved look. "I'll try to remember that, Fawkes." she replied. They flew for a bit, somewhat awkwardly. "You're not a failure." she said to him in a low voice.

It was his turn to be a bit embarrassed and awkward. He would have gone bright red, if he wasn't already. The thought of that day... Even without having relived the memory, he could remember the pain and knowledge of failure he'd had. Despite what Lucinda said, he knew it had been a failure. "Whether I'm a failure or not... That was still my greatest, and worst, failure. I was supposed to protect the school, but I got lost in my grief and let what Albus had died protecting get hurt. Students died that day, not just the Order and Death Eaters. Innocent students that got caught in the cross fire, students I was supposed to keep safe." His voice didn't hold any of the fiery anger from before, and had diminished to a sort of resigned tone.

Lucinda listened to him, her original thoughts about Fawkes ripped away. Underneath his silliness and little quirks, was someone hurting just as much as she was. Though the hurt was different. Fawkes and Dumbledore had ended on great terms with each other, before being violently ripped away by the ravages of war. She couldn't imagine how painful it must have been to lose someone like that. "We've all made mistakes, Fawkes." she said finally. "But grieving your master wasn't one of them. The two of you shared a truly precious bond, and you allowed yourself to mourn him." She felt some of her warmth returning, a sign that Arcix hadn't taken as much as she'd thought. "How could you have focused when going through such a hard thing? Your mind was not in the right place, and any attempts you made to help would have made things worse."
Like the way I rushed in as soon as I got my powers. Lucinda thought, before pushing that thought back. "You're not perfect, Fawkes. Nobody is. You needed to recover, even just a little."

Fawkes didn't reply right away. He remembered that year of grieving. He'd felt the tug of his vow and blatantly ignored it in favor of his grief. Burning day then proceeded turn him into a chick as punishment. The worst part was that he hadn't even grieved properly.
"I visited Albus' grave for the first time two days ago. I haven't been able to do so for two hundred years."

"At least you were able to." Lucinda said. She couldn't help but admire him for finally being able to do so. She knew that she'd never be able to visit her old master's grave. "What was it like?" she asked him, both curious and concerned.

"Both relieving and saddening." Fawkes replied, "It was great to finally do it- almost like closure. But... visiting made me remember the day he returned to Hogwarts, with a cursed, broken hand that I could not heal, try as I might. All while Severus worked over him, I worried about him. He told my he would day within a year that day. "
"The grave reminds me of how he would have greeted death. He would be glad to finally see his sister in good health once again, his parents together and happy with their little girl. One day his brother would join him and they wouldn't be a broken family anymore. But he was scared, he never spoke of it, but I could tell he was scared that they would disapprove of him, not want him, silly fear, how could they disapprove? But I can't imagine he's afraid any longer." Fawkes looked over at Lucinda, the familiar twinkle (Damn that twinkling eye!) returning. "After all, to the organized mind, death is but the next adventure." Then the phoenix looked away, "I'm sorry, I went off on a bit of a rant there, didn't I?"

Death is the next adventure, huh? For some reason, those words made her feel uneasy. "It's fine, Fawkes." Lucinda said, rather impressed by what he had to say. "I liked listening to you. Albus sounds like a great man." She beamed at him, spotting one of the worse off dementors.

Fawkes nodded, "He was." Then he lapsed into a comfortable silence as he also saw the Dementor and angled toward it.

"I'll handle this one." she said to Fawkes placidly.
"Food?" moaned the creature pitifully. "Need food."
"And I will offer you some." she said soothingly, offering up just enough to revive him. The creature got up.
"Thank you." he said, without showing any signs of hostility.
"You're welcome." she replied, glad this one had gone well.

Fawkes watched the exchange carefully, ready to act if the creature decided to follow it's leaders example and try to steal more then it's share. When Lucinda was finished, he returned to the sky to search for another.

It continued like that for most of the way. On occasion, some dementors tried to take too much, but the two were able to better look after each other. They didn't get caught in memories again, though by the time they finished, Lucinda felt actual coldness. A most unwelcome sensation.

Once their job had been accomplished, Fawkes had given so much of his warmth, that the natural frigid atmosphere of the island was beginning to get to him. He shivered in voluntarily as he reached for his remaining warmth to ward of the cold. As the flew away from the last Dementor, Fawkes asked Lucinda, "Where to next? Any more jobs that need doing?"

"Nope." Lucinda said, relieved. "Not for a while, yet. I think I want to head back to Rhea and ask her to use a fire spell on me." A hint of delight made its way into her voice. "Later on, I'm going to check in with everyone and see how they're holding up."

Fawkes nodded, he was half tempted to join Lucinda, but ultimately decided that Lucinda would need it more then he would. Besides, perhaps he could fly around the general camp of the magical creatures and find something interesting to do until the battle... Maybe there were penguins on this island! "Alright then. I think I'll leave you to that, I'm going to go and look around the island."

Lucinda regarded him, both amused and concerned. "Fawkes, you just gave a large amount of your warmth. If you're going to go look for penguins, please wait until after you've recovered."

Fawkes pouted. "But the penguins await me! I wonder if they'll teach my why they sit on an egg for so long... Why not pile them all together and pack snow on top to keep them warm?" He shook his head, bemused that a penguin would keep an egg for so long.

Lucinda sighed. Fawkes seemed to be feeling better after all. "Alright, but be careful." she said dubiously. "And feel free to tell us all about your penguin friends when you come back." she added, slightly amused.

"I'll tell you all about them!" Fawkes replied, looking forward to visiting the infamous flightless birds in suits in their natural habitat. Maybe they were a bit less of an oddball then their domestic counter parts.... On that note, Fawkes left with a goodbye called over his shoulder.

Lucinda flew back to the shelter that Rhea had made, and flew to sit in her lap. She chirped happily, relieved to be away from the dementors.

Rhea looked up as Lucinda returned. The werewolf had conjured up a book that she'd left on the bedside table that she had been reading. "Hello Birdy." She greeted in a semi- chirpy voice. "How did the mission go?"

Lucinda beamed at her. "It went very well." she said, enjoying the warmth she exuded. "Well, not at first. One of the dementors got a little too greedy, but we're okay."

Rhea eyes narrowed a bit, "As long as your not hurt..." She muttered, disliking the idea of the Dementors being so greedy. "Is there anything I can do to help?" Rhea didn't like just sitting here while Lucinda and Fawkes went and did real work- like she was just lazying about.

Rhea nodded and quickly raised her wand, saying the normal "Incendio!" To procure flames to engulf the bird.
